Versatility: Kodak Gold 200 tends to produce warm, slightly vintage colors and it’s very easy to use in different light conditions. This makes it a great all around film to use in most situations. Photographers looking for that warm, pleasing and vintage color tone in their shots will find this film very appealing and will likely be satisfied with the results.
Low Cost and Wide Availability: As a consumer film, it’s priced considerably lower than it’s pro-grades such as Portra or Ektar. This makes it a very low cost, high quality film for photographers. Also, since it is sold in the consumer market, it’s widely available and easy to get hold of.
Color Reproduction: Film colors through this film are luminous and rather vibrant while maintaining a sort of true-to-life quality with perhaps a little extra warmth. This creates an image that feels nostalgic and perhaps a bit more interesting than what you might find in a straight neutral 8-bit digital image. For these reasons, I think this film is best suited for most general subjects including landscapes, street, and portraits.
Grain and Aesthetic: Kodak Gold 200 is a rather grainy film especially when compared to the super smooth ISO 100 and 200 C-41 films designed for professionals. However, I find the grain in Kodak Gold 200 to be rather attractive and it certainly adds character to an image.
Some photographers may prefer this kind of grain as it reminds them of the traditional feel of film. Once again, the color palette and grain structure of this film is what makes it appealing for the photographer who wants a certain film look.
Flexibility: In proper bright well lit situations, this film really shines (pardon the pun). I shoot quite a bit with Fujicolor 200 and Superia 200 and the results are pretty much the same.
Now, don’t get me wrong, Kodak Gold 200 is not the greatest film in the world and it doesn’t produce results like, say, Eastman Double-X 5222 or Agfa Vista 200, but if you factor in the whole shooting scenario, it becomes a pretty good choice most of the time.
In low light, Gold 200 doesn’t do as well as Ultramax or any other film with a higher ISO but in well lit situations, this will be my go-to film. I’m sure a lot of photographers will be using this film through 35mm, 120, and 4×5 lenses.
