Kodak Gold 400 was the faster sibling in the Gold family, same warm color palette as Gold 200, but with more visible grain and enough speed to handle indoor light without a flash. That versatility made it a practical choice for photographers who wanted one roll that could go from an afternoon outside to a dinner party without missing a beat.

The color signature was the real draw. Warm, slightly saturated, with a particular affinity for skin tones and natural light. The grain at ISO 400 is more pronounced than Gold 200, but it sits well in the image, adding texture rather than noise.

It was also a consumer film, which meant it was affordable and available everywhere. A lot of photographers who couldn’t justify the cost of Portra or Ektar shot Gold 400 and got results they were genuinely happy with.

Kodak discontinued Gold 400 around 2010. What’s left exists on the secondhand market. These presets exist to keep that look accessible.

The two films share the same DNA but pull in different directions. Gold 200 is cleaner and slightly more neutral,  the everyday film for bright outdoor situations where you want warmth without too much grain. Gold 400 pushes that further.

The warmth is more pronounced, the saturation is higher, and the grain is more visible. It also handles lower light better than Gold 200, though it’s still a daylight film at heart. If you want a subtler film look, Gold 200 is the call. If you want the film character to actually show up in your images, Gold 400 delivers it more directly. Gold 400’s warmth and grain work best when the subject calls for some character:

• Portraits in natural light: the warmth flatters skin tones, especially in afternoon or golden hour light
• Travel and street: the extra grain gives urban shots and candid frames a lived-in quality
• Parties and social events: Gold 400 was the film people loaded for birthdays, gatherings, and holidays. These presets suit that same energy
• Wedding photography: receptions, candid moments, and low-key outdoor ceremonies all respond well to the warmer, more saturated palette
• Overcast days: where Gold 200 can go slightly flat, Gold 400’s warmer base holds up better in diffused light

Installing Presets in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 10.3+ (Windows & Mac)

1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.
2. At the top menue click on Filter and select “Camera Raw Filter”.
3. On the right you see the word “Basic” click the small burger next to it. Then, click “Load Settings”.
4. Choose the .xmp file(s) from downloaded and unzipped folder. Then click on “Load” button.
5. To apply a preset, click on OK button.
