Agfa introduced Scala in 1993. It was one of only a small number of black-and-white reversal films ever made commercially available, and the only one at ISO 200.

Unlike conventional B&W films such as TRI-X or T-MAX, which produce a negative image requiring inversion to print or display, Scala produced a positive transparency. The developed film strip showed the image directly, bright areas of the scene appeared bright on the film, dark areas appeared dark. This is the same principle as color slide film, but in pure monochrome.

The look this produced was distinctive. Because the image didn’t pass through the inversion and printing process of negative film, the tonal relationship between highlights and shadows was purer. Blacks were denser. Highlights stayed clean. The fine grain, even at ISO 200 meant it held sharp detail across the tonal range.

Scala required its own dedicated processing chemistry, known as Scala Process or Process 41. It could not be developed in standard B&W chemistry (D-76, HC-110) or color E-6. It needed specialist labs, which became rarer as digital photography reduced demand. Agfa discontinued Scala 200X in 2004.

These Agfa Scala 200X Presets recreate the look of a black-and-white reversal film, not a standard B&W negative conversion. Here’s what to know:

• They work in Lightroom Desktop and Lightroom Mobile for Android and iPhone.
• RAW files give the best results. The tonal behavior of Scala’s reversal rendering shows more clearly on RAW than JPEG.
• Because Scala was a high-contrast film, the presets respond well to properly exposed images. Heavily underexposed shots will lose shadow detail that Scala would have kept.
• The filter variants (Red, Blue, Green) work best when your original image has color information for the filter to act on. A photo already desaturated before applying will show less difference between them.
• Use HC for strong graphic work, architecture, street, bold compositions.
• Use LC for portraits or scenes where you want softer tonal gradation.
• The Selenium and Sepia variants add a tone over the B&W base. If the effect is too strong, lower the intensity in Lightroom’s HSL panel.

Installing Presets in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 10.3+ (Windows & Mac)

1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.
2. At the top menu click on Filter and select “Camera Raw Filter”.
3. On the right you see the word “Basic” click the small burger next to it. Then, click “Load Settings”.
4. Choose the .xmp file(s) from downloaded and unzipped folder. Then click on “Load” button.
5. To apply a preset, click on OK button.
