Tips & Tricks for Black and White Photos

• Look for Contrast – dark shadows and bright highlights make black and white photos more interesting.
• Pay attention to Textures and Patterns – these stand out better without color distractions.
• Use simple Compositions – avoid busy scenes that can look messy without color.
• Shoot in bright light or harsh Shadows for more dramatic effects.
• Capture people’s Expressions and Emotions which show clearly in black and white.
• Look for strong Geometric shapes and Leading lines to guide the viewer’s eye.
• Simplify your Subjects – remove distractions and focus on what’s important in your frame.

Not if your photo is properly exposed. These black and white portrait presets use a tone curve built around how skin actually holds midtone contrast, not a straight desaturation. If skin still looks flat on a specific shot, lift the midtones in the Tone Curve panel rather than adjusting Color Mix, that’s almost always an exposure issue in the original photo, not the preset.

Yes, but they’re tuned specifically for portrait work. You’ll still get good results on landscapes or objects, but the contrast curve and skin-tone handling are calibrated around people, so portraits are where these presets perform best.

Installing Presets in Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) 10.3+ (Windows & Mac)

1. Open your image in Adobe Photoshop.
2. At the top menu click on Filter and select “Camera Raw Filter”.
3. On the right you see the word “Basic” click the small burger next to it. Then, click “Load Settings”.
4. Choose the .xmp file(s) from downloaded and unzipped folder. Then click on “Load” button.
5. To apply a preset, click on OK button.
